Primary Election Day is August 10!

What exactly is the Primary Election?
Think of the primary
like the play-offs – it’s the final step in determining who will be on the
ballot in the general election in November. By voting in the primary, you help
determine who will make important decisions about schools, jobs, health care
and more. The purpose of the Primary Election is to elect candidates within one
political party (Republican, DFL, Independent, Green) that you think best
represent your values and should be included on the General Election ballot on
November 2. All voters in the Primary will be asked to choose a candidate for
governor. Some Minnesotans will also be voting on candidates in
Congressional and legislative races.
Why vote in the Primary Election?
Your vote helps to shape the future of
Minnesota. Far fewer people vote in the primary than in the general
election so a few votes can make the difference in a heated race!
When is the
Primary Election?
You can vote in
person on August 10 at the polls between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. If you will be
away from the precinct on that day, you can vote absentee by mail. Visit the
Secretary of State’s website (www.mnvotes.org)
to locate your polling place or call 1-877-600-VOTE (8683).
What else can you do to
stay involved this summer? Advocate!
Opportunities
abound as we head into election season. There are many opportunities to influence your elected
officials during the summer, particularly with so many people running for
office this November. Visit with candidates at various parades and fairs,
attend candidate forums, and be an informed voter. Candidates are already
door-knocking, so be prepared to share with them the issues that matter most to
you -- particularly that jobs and specifically transitional jobs are
critical to Minnesotans right now.
We'll have
other opportunities for you to be involved as the summer moves on and the elections
grow closer, so stay tuned and if you haven’t already, sign
up for our Advocacy Alerts emails!
