Breaking down barriers for our participants who are ex-offenders

Second Chance Day on the Hill 2012

As a member of the Minnesota Second Chance Coalition, Goodwill/Easter Seals participated in the 5th-annual Second Chance Day on the Hill on Jan. 31 at the Capitol. The Second Chance Coalition is a group of more than 50 organizations who support second chances for individuals impacted by the criminal justice system. We believe ex-offenders have paid their debt to society and deserve a second chance to become law-abiding, taxpaying citizens.

With more than 80 people representing Goodwill/Easter Seals at the event at the capitol, and over 200 people total, we consider it a great success. After the rally (which included testimonies from legislators, clergy, law enforcement officers, nonprofit leaders and ex-offenders) our attendees held in-person meetings with a record 20 legislators – talking with them about reducing barriers to employment for individuals with criminal records as well as felon voting rights.
