Goodwill/Easter Seals has been helping people overcome barriers to independence and self-sufficiency for nearly 100 years. The St. Paul Goodwill Industries began in 1919 when a handful of St. Paul businessmen and religious leaders became determined to create employment opportunities for people in St. Paul who were disabled or uneducated and couldn’t find jobs elsewhere. These leaders purchased a one-story church to provide space and employed approximately 60 people with mental and physical disabilities to sew and repair donated items. These items were then sold in our first Goodwill store located in that same church. In the first few years, these items generated $40,000 of revenue which was used to pay wages.
The business model has evolved over the last century, but the Goodwill thrift stores remain as one way to raise funds to support our mission. Today, Goodwill/Easter Seals operates 28 retail stores across the state of Minnesota and western Wisconsin. The revenue generated by those stores, combined with financial contributions from more than 4,000 donors, makes it possible for Goodwill/Easter Seals to now serve more than 18,000 individuals experiencing barriers to independence each year.
