Job Development and Financial Literacy Specialist-AmeriCorps VISTA

Volunteer your time and talent over the next year in an AmeriCorps VISTA position!

The Job Development and Financial Literacy Specialist VISTA Member will work with community partners and employers. The VISTA member will: 1) Research potential employers who have jobs that are appropriate for people with criminal backgrounds; 2) Make introductory calls and meet with employers to educate them on the importance of hiring people with criminal backgrounds; 3) act as the liaison between employers and the program staff; 4) Identify and compile a list of financial agencies providing support services for ex-offenders; 5) Work with staff to create and promote new financial literacy opportunities and develop new training materials targeted to the needs of ex-offenders; 6) Create new financial literacy activities activities; 7) Develop and refine systems to manage the information collected on employers and financial organizations to ensure long term sustainability. Volunteer Mentor

Are you interested in making a difference in the life of someone transitioning out of community corrections? Do you have experience with or knowledge of the criminal justice system, sociology, family dynamics or other life skills? Goodwill/Easter Seals Minnesota is looking for volunteers to mentor our adult participants that have transitioned out of corrections and are receiving case management and employment services through our programs. The ideal volunteer mentor will be comfortable working with people from diverse backgrounds, able to provide a listening ear and constructive feedback and offer support. The mentoring partnership will be focused on goals such as securing employment, family relationships or financial literacy. Skills Training Information Session Assistant

Help someone start a new future!

Twice a month Goodwill holds Skills Training Information Sessions for people who are interested in participating in our cutting edge training programs. The focus of this volunteer position is to assist GES staff in serving job seekers at our Skills Training Information Sessions. Volunteers will be asked to create a welcoming atmosphere while signing in participants, escorting participants to waiting area and assist participants in scheduling assessment appointments. who would be able to make individuals feel welcome and assist with details involved with the running of the session. This includes but is not limited to helping people sign in, directing people to the rooms they need to be in and assisting to schedule assessment tests. This is a great way to make an impact in just a few hours a month!

When: Second and fourth Tuesday of each month from 1 – 3 p.m.

Assessment Testing Assistant

Help someone get started in a new journey!

The focus of this volunteer position is to assist with our Employment, Training and Education assessment sessions.  Volunteers will be asked to assist individuals in the testing process by setting up typing tests, verify typing scores and assisting individuals with paperwork. This volunteer position requires an interest in teaching or tutoring and general computer knowledge and familiarity with basic computer functions such as web browsing, Microsoft Word, typing etc.  Ability to work with people who have very diverse needs including but not limited to: low computer literacy, English language learners, reading and learning disabilities. This is a great way to help people who are trying to better themselves with just a few hours of your time per week!

When
: Mondays or Wednesdays from 11 a.m.-12:00 p.m. or Thursdays from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Volunteers are asked to sign up for one time slot a week.

Mock Interviewer

Do you have experience providing employment interviews? Volunteer mock Interviewers are needed to provide valuable practice job interviews for participants in skills training classes, job development or work experience programs. Mock interviewers must be able to conduct professional, consistent interviews for our participants with a wide variety of interviewing abilities, disabilities, and backgrounds. Interviews are offered as a way to reinforce course curriculum and refine interviewing skills.

Automotive Skills Training Volunteer

Share your knowledge and passion for repairing cars. Work with our full-time trainer and assist our automotive skills students to learn job skills as they prepare for a new career in automotive repair. Provide support and guidance for Goodwill/Easter Seals Minnesota Automotive Skills Training participants. Training focuses on safety, tool use, fluid and tire maintenance, vehicle inspection and brake repair.

When: Mon. – Fri., 8 a.m. – 1 p.m., two to five hours per day, four days per week preferred.

GED Tutor at the FATHER Project

The FATHER (Fostering Actions To Help Earnings and Responsibility) Project is a program of Goodwill/Easter Seals Minnesota. The goal of the FATHER Project is to assist parents in overcoming the barriers that prevent them from supporting their children economically and emotionally. Goodwill/Easter Seals Minnesota is looking for volunteers to work individually with program participants to help them prepare to take the General Educational Development (GED) exam. The goal of the program is to help participants pass each of the parts of the GED exam so that they can receive their diploma. Review key concepts with adult participants including English, math, social studies and science.

When: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., two-hour shift preferred.

GOALS Volunteer

The GOALS (Goals On Average Life Styles) Program provides support for at-risk youth who want to make positive changes in their lives and improve their critical thinking in areas of planning, choices and goal setting. Youth set their own goals with direction from non-judgmental adults who guide them through a contracting process. After each contract, each youth earns a $15 bonus. Volunteer your time and energy working with youth participating in the GOALS Program located at the Goodwill Store in Willmar. Volunteers will work directly with youth by providing them with tools to help developing problem solving skills and techniques.

Where: Goodwill/Easter Seals Minnesota location in Willmar, 2424 First St. S., Willmar, MN 56201
When: 12:30 – 4:30 p.m., Mon. – Fri. Ideally, volunteers would spend two to four hours per week.

Construction Skills Trainer Volunteer

Use your construction related expertise to help to guide our Construction Skills Training Program participants in the training shop and at construction sites! Work with the trainer to provide additional training support with safety, construction industry fundamentals, hand and power tool use, framing basics, blue print reading, construction related math and other topics. Required qualifications include strong hand and power tool skills, and strong knowledge of general building concepts. The ideal candidate should have extensive construction experience.

When: Mon. – Fri., 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. 5 – 10+ hours per week for two plus months preferred.

Volunteer Jewelry Drives

Volunteer your time coordinating a jewelry drive!
Goodwill/Easter Seals Minnesota has an auxiliary group of volunteers called Goodwill Industries Volunteer Services (GIVS). The GIVS group raises money through vintage fashion shows, jewelry sales, benefit luncheons and other fundraising events. Gently-used jewelry (earrings, necklaces, bracelets, watches, cuff links, and pins) is accepted through donations and sold at jewelry sales throughout the year. All of the money raised from the jewelry sale goes directly to assist participants in Goodwill/Easter Seals Minnesota training programs. Only Goodwill/Easter Seals Minnesota program participants are eligible to apply to utilize this Emergency Fund.

Volunteer Book Drives

Volunteer your time coordinating a book drive!
Support the e-Commerce Department at Goodwill/Easter Seals Minnesota. The funds raised from the book sales go to support our mission of providing job training and support to individuals with disabilities and other barriers to employment. While all books are accepted, the following books are in high demands: nonfiction textbooks, hardcover fiction, regional books, self-help, dieting and health, cookbooks, inspirational/religious and finance.

Speed Mock Interviewing

Volunteer your time providing speed mock interviews with our participants! 

Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota's mission is to assist people with barriers to education, employment and independence in achieving their goals.  One way we do this is by providing participants with Employment Readiness Training. This is a multiple day class that covers completing job applications, creating a resume, and what to expect from interview. At the end of the training, participants practice what they learned by participating in mock interviews.  These interviews will take place in a unique and exciting speed interviewing format. Volunteers will have the opportunity to provide mock interviews to multiple participants and provide them with constructive feedback about their answers and general impressions.  We are looking for volunteers with some experience providing interviews.  Volunteers should be comfortable interviewing and giving constructive feedback to interviewees with a wide variety of skills and abilities.

Special Projects Volunteer

Are you interested in volunteering but don’t want to make a long term commitment? We are looking for volunteers who would be interested in helping when we have special projects or needs that arise. This could range from helping out with mailings, assisting with a computer lab class, participating in prep work for our Bridal event, sorting holiday merchandise etc. The opportunities are endless and the scheduling is flexible!
