All plaid out

By Guest Blogger Lisa Marie Gherardini
Have you noticed the serious upsurge in the amount of plaid being donated to Goodwill lately? Well, in case you haven’t and didn’t get the memo, plaid is not only for hipsters, schoolgirls and lumberjacks anymore. The Fall 2013 runways gave way to an array of plaids in a myriad of colors, textures and reinvented styles. It was the glue that bound this seasons hautest trends together.

From ’90s Grunge, Punk Anarchic, the ’40s-inspired New “New Look” to Menswear Mystique, there truly seems to be a genre that every fashion forward female could get “all plaid out” in on a budget. With inspirational images from my favorite runway trends, I set out on a mission: $40 to put together three plaid looks for less. Here is my outcome with the addition of a few already owned items from Goodwill’s high-end designer boutique, Second Début™.

The plaid shirt

First up is a Saint Laurent Grunge look, invoking the spirit of Courtney Love circa the Nineties. Think your boyfriend’s oversized flannel button up meets floral, lace, graphic tees, torn tights and biker boots. Whether running around uptown or going to a show at First Avenue, this is a look that is sure to turn heads. LEFT {Vintage Pendleton magenta plaid shirt $2.99, BCBG graphic chain bib tee $4.99 (half off yellow tag sale $2.50), vintage no label gold metallic lace skirt $3.99, skinny grey leather belt $1.99, steel toe work boots $4.99, blue round sunnies and textured tights stylist own} TOTAL $

Next I followed Donatella Versace’s example and toughened up some yellow tartan with vinyl, chains and spikes. This is a plaid-specific trend that truly comes to life with its accessories and really reminisces the glory days of Sid and Nancy. RIGHT {handmade no label yellow plaid jacket $6.99 (half off yellow tag sale $3.50), Target brand vinyl piped leggings $4.99, Croft&Barrow black and white blouse $4.99 (half off yellow tag sale $2.50), ZigiSoho cage platforms $4.99, Rebecca Minkoff red studded bag from Second Debut™, necklace/bracelets stylist own} TOTAL $15.98

Another hot trend is the post world war Christian Dior New “New Look.” Designers such as Celine and Aquilano Rimondi reinvented this trend with high-waisted, mid-calf skirts in full pleated flares and ultra skinny pencils. An office-friendly look best suited for the curvy feminine physique. {Vintage L.L. Bean plaid midi skirt $4.99 (half off yellow tag sale $2.50), Diane Von Furstenburg black blazer from Second Debut™, navy sheer long sleeve $3.99 (half off yellow tag sale $1.50), navy corduroy belt $.99, Chinese Laundry cage heels $4.99 (half off yellow tag sale $2.50), vintage Anne Klein envelope clutch from Second Debut™} TOTAL $7.49

These three staple plaid pieces were procured with ease amongst an abundance of options in size, color and pattern at my neighborhood Goodwill store for a total of $39.93. Each piece could be easily interchanged into any of the four trends I described above. So pull out your plaid and consider it the new leopard, because it is here to stay for at least another season!
