A note from the President – providing gifts that matter in the lives of our participants

It’s the holiday season, the time of year when we all seem to think a little more about the gifts we give.

Gifts, of course, come in all shapes and sizes. Some mean more than others, or have a greater impact on someone’s life.

One way that Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota is fortunate is that we are able to see how what we do makes a difference in the lives of our participants. We see how each gift matters.

For someone struggling to overcome a barrier they are facing to work or independence, there is no greater gift than the assistance they may need to overcome that barrier. In 2015 we were able to give that gift frequently. We were able to offer 85,000 services that helped eliminate barriers to work and independence for 21,000 people.

We’re also fortunate that we are able to spend the time it takes to get to know our participants and understand how to help. The ability to understand which gifts matter – to know what gift will have the greatest impact on a life – comes from the hard work and expertise of the amazing staff we have.

Often the gift we provided was the skills needed for someone like Danielle to start a new career. But many times the gifts we were able to offer extended beyond career skills – with Jason, the gift was not just skills to get started in a career, but the tools he needed to succeed at his job once he was there. For Sabrina, it was not just providing her with job skills after she’d gone through a period of homelessness, but getting to know her well enough to find out that her children had no beds to sleep on – and then doing what was necessary to make sure we could provide them.

The gifts we are able to offer our participants are the direct result of the gifts that are given to us by everyone involved with our efforts. That includes our business partners, shoppers, donors, volunteers and staff. Whether it is financial gifts, or the gift of time and energy, we are thankful that together we are able to use those gifts to provide the gift of work and independence to our participants.

Thank you for helping to make 2015 a wonderful year at Goodwill-Easter Seals. We look forward to another great year in 2016. Have an enjoyable holiday season.
