Anyone interested in starting college knows how many decisions must be made, including: how to pay for it; how much time to plan for studying; what school to attend and what to study. Not only are they difficult choices to make, but they’re the type of choices that make a great difference to your career and your life.

To help prospective college students make the choices that will allow them to succeed in college and their careers, Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota has recently expanded their College and Career Navigation Program to include a College Preparation course that will allow them to provide more people with the support they need.

“If you’re interested in going to college but have some questions about how to do it, we can help you,” said Workforce Development Manager Cassandra Avery, who will be managing the program. “We want to make sure people have access to the support they need,” she explained.

“We’ve had long partnerships with St. Paul College, Inver Hills College, and Dakota County Technical College,” Cassandra explained. “We wanted to be able to serve more people, so we’ve been working to expand the service.”

Enrolled students will work with an assigned College and Career Navigator, who will provide diagnostics for assessment as well as individual counseling to discuss participant’s interests, educational goals and career expectations. “The course is designed to help people be successful once they’re on campus,” Cassandra said. “Ultimately, the goal is to increase participant’s earning power and self-sufficiency through education.”

Some highlights of the program include:

  • Exploring college and program options
  • Navigating college enrollment, financial aid and other resources
  • Balancing education with family and work
  • Overcoming obstacles and accessing support for transportation, child care or housing
  • Facilitating connections with college staff and faculty

The College Preparation course is one month long and is held three days a week for two hours a day at Goodwill-Easter Seals. It is designed to provide a foundation for students who may be interested in career and college planning, and give them an initial starting point before working more individually with Goodwill-Easter Seals staff.
