Comcast Cares Day results in 100 hygiene kits for Goodwill-Easter Seals’ participants
On April 25, 2015, twenty Comcast staff volunteered with Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota as part of their National Comcast Cares Day. Comcast Cares Day brings their employees, friends and families together with nonprofit partners to make change happen in hundreds of local communities from coast to coast and abroad. This year, Goodwill-Easter Seals was one of the sites chosen to take part in this event.
The project leader at Comcast was Ashely Phillippe, who began rounding up volunteers and purchasing items several weeks before the event. Their group took an innovative approach that greatly benefited the people we serve. Comcast first purchased the items for the kits and then assembled them during their Comcast Cares Day event. These kits fill a critical need for our participants in transition during their job search. They include basic necessities such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soap, razors, lotion and shampoo.
While assembling the kits, the Comcast staff learned more about our mission and the people we serve. Once assembled, they brought the kits to our main office to share with our participants. The volunteers then spent a few more hours in our new Brooklyn Park Donation Center providing hands-on assistance sorting through our new donations.
“I learned a lot about what Goodwill does for people in the community that I did not know before,” Ashely told us. “I had no idea that they help people who are transitioning to the workforce, or about their online store.”
The day was a huge success as the twenty volunteers were able to assemble over 100 culturally appropriate hygiene kits. Plus, after learning more about what we do and the needs of our participants, they later dropped off over 1,500 laundry pods for us to share with our participants.
Ashely was excited at the thought of returning to help at Goodwill-Easter Seals again. “I enjoy helping and hope that we can be involved with Goodwill-Easter Seals next year. I would love to be your project leader again.”
We appreciate the efforts of the Comcast staff who shared their energy and resources with us. Hundreds of people were impacted by having much-needed hygiene items and laundry detergent. We welcome any individual or corporate groups to volunteer with us in the future! To do so, contact Rebecca Bedner, Director of Volunteer Services, for more information.
