In Minneapolis it’s pretty hard to find the perfect date outfit for Valentine’s Day when it’s negative temps. When my husband and I do get the rare opportunity to sneak away for some alone time, I generally want to dress up and when doing so, I rely on a statement jacket in order to pull off date night without looking frumpy. The right jacket is key, it should be form fitting and functional.
The black leather jacket is a current trend that is taking over street style and runways this season. I found this non-labeled leather jacket at Goodwill for only $15 when living in San Francisco a few years back. It just goes to show you how classic pieces can stand the test of time. This has been hiding away in my closet for a while and have just begun to take it out again. Goodwill can be a great shopping destination for trendy pieces as well, it allows you to dabble in experimenting with your wardrobe without the price tag of an item that is likely to go out of style quicker than you can say next season …
After picking out the jacket for our date night, I wanted to pair it with something feminine. The leather jacket can have a tough exterior if paired with anything else that is androgynous in style. Therefore I went the complete opposite direction with something very feminine. This black lace pencil skirt compliments the jacket perfectly, pulling the all-black look together by offering a different texture. When pairing an all-black ensemble you want to be sure to mix up either the materials or the shades in order to keep things flattering.
Goodwill can also be a gold mine in terms of buying basic pieces and more often than not I’m finding name brand items. It’s hard to fork over a substantial amount for something plain, even with the use you may be able to get out of it, so I definitely hunt for my black and white tees, blazers, and tailored coats at Goodwill locations whenever I stop in!
