Deck the halls… on a budget

Tis the season to be jolly, hang holly, and decorate your home like you’re on the set of Elf. Maybe you’ve inherited some holiday decor, but odds are you probably want to add your own little touches here and there to make your home feel just right. On my most recent trip to Goodwill I was able to find some really neat decor items, and for a fraction of the cost it would’ve been to purchase new!

Here are some ideas for what to keep your eyes open for the next time you’re thrifting:

Mantel Decor Pieces – Number one: I love garland. It is something that just makes the world of a difference when you’re decorating for the holidays. Beyond that, white Christmas lights are always a nice touch as well for any room. I also love to look for high and low pieces – things to add some height to the mantel, and other items to place low at the base. The image here shows an aluminum star on a tall post, along with a metallic candle stick and lantern. All items that I found at Goodwill!

An empty mantel is not fun at all – but with a few Goodwill finds you can make it festive and fun!

Wall Decor – I love the unique wall decor that you can discover while thrifting. From burlap, to wooden, there are all kinds of cute pieces I’ve seen. If you’re feeling crafty, you can even find a base that you think would make for a great sign and use acrylic paints to create your own signage! You could paint your last name, a family saying or even your favorite line from a Christmas movie!

It’s a wonderful life! Especially if you’re able to decorate with Goodwill finds and use your savings on gifts (or something else).

Wreaths and Foliage – Apparently a lot of people are like me and get tired of their wreaths after a couple years, because there always seems to be a plethora of wreaths that are still in great shape! I’ve found a lot of nice wreaths there, and either cleaned them up, or added to them to make them even prettier! And don’t forget faux poinsettias, they’re probably the easiest plants to take care of!

Trees – Big and small, you can find the whole range of Christmas trees at Goodwill. As I was checking out, I saw a stack of about seven large artificial Christmas trees, still in the box. I also found a few smaller trees that would look great on a tabletop or fireplace mantel. The decor options are endless, you could even bring in help and have the kids decorate their own little tree!

After-Christmas sales might net you a good tree deal, but if you need a tree for Christmas this year you can find affordable options at Goodwill

Holiday Villages – If you’ve ever collected little holiday village pieces, you’re going to love the fact that you can find them and other unique pieces at the thrift store. I found all kinds of beautiful options when I was in the holiday aisle, it almost made me want to start collecting them! Plus, they are one of those things that you can pass on through the years.

Ornaments – You can find some really cool and unique ornaments at the thrift store as well, both new and old! Use them to decorate your tree, wreaths, fridge, mantel or whatever needs decorating!

Glittery trumpets, frosted pine cones, and shiny lightbulbs – just some of the decorations you’ll find at Goodwill.

You can decorate any room in your house with just a few pre-loved pieces at Goodwill. I’ve scoured the shelves and found some really neat pieces to make our holiday decor truly unique! Now I put you to the test: What can you create?
