Big crowds make Diversity Career Fair a success
On Thursday Aug. 6 the Diversity Career Fair was held at Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota in St. Paul. Over 100 businesses were in attendance, which drew in a crowd of job-seekers estimated to be well over a thousand. The event was not only an opportunity to connect businesses with future employees, but was also a showcase for the wide variety of partnerships maintained by Goodwill-Easter Seals.
One of those partnerships is with the state of Minnesota’s Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED). Katie Clark Sieben, DEED’s commissioner, was at the event, and we asked her how Goodwill-Easter Seals was chosen to be the host. “We have a strong partnership with Goodwill-Easter Seals,” she answered. ”And the location is fantastic.”
Commissioner Sieben opened the event with some remarks, followed by Wells Fargo vice president Philomena Morrissey Satre, who told the crowd that “It’s important to be involved in the community. We want to be able to assist job-seekers.”
Goodwill-Easter Seals’ business partnerships were evident as well. One of our important partnerships in outstate Minnesota is with Jenni-O Foods, who were present at the Career Fair and looking to fill several openings. They are based in Willmar but, as Terri Fehn from Jenni-O explained to us, they have production openings around Minnesota and Wisconsin. “Jenni-O actively seeks out diversity, including supporting our military by hiring veterans,” Terri said.
A newcomer to Goodwill-Easter Seals’ career fairs was Saputo Dairy Foods USA. Representing Saputo at the Diversity Career Fair was Ben Crockett. Ben remarked that “Saputo believes in diversity, and we’ve had success working with DEED in the past.”
Commissioner Sieben echoed the support for diversity. “A diverse workforce creates a competitive advantage for businesses,” she explained. “it’s important that our workforce is representative of our population.”
Goodwill-Easter Seals Business Development Manager James Houston was excited about how things went. “Overall it was a great event. There are some great opportunities out there with some great companies for folks who are interested in starting out or taking their career to the next level.”
