Here’s what happened when Goodwill Outlets started using reusable bags

Did you know that over 100 billion plastic shopping bags are thrown away in the United States every year?

That’s a startling statistic, and as an organization that prides itself on diverting trash from landfills, we decided to take action.

One way we’re tackling the problem is by gradually inserting reusable bags into our stores as an option at checkout, starting with our Goodwill Outlet locations. After six months, our plastic bag usage is down 60 percent and we plan to eliminate plastic bags from the outlets completely in 2017.

When we don’t send reusable bags home with our customers, we donate them to a food shelf to send home with people in need, filled with nutritional food.
