In late September, Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota received information explaining how we could nominate our participants to receive assistance from the Greater Twin Cities United Way’s Holiday Wishes Program.
We’re excited to announce that three of our participant’s wishes were granted. One of them, Star, who was nominated by her Goodwill-Easter Seals’ career counselor, had her story featured in an article in the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
Holiday Wishes is an annual giving program for local families in need. The program is a partnership between United Way and the Pioneer Press that began in 1997, when $6,000 was raised. Eighteen years later, in 2014, an incredible $113,400 was raised. This year the program will provide help to 35 local families.
Congratulations and thanks to everyone involved in successfully submitting applications.
In her nomination her Goodwill-Easter Seals’ counselor stated that “Star would make an excellent candidate for this program because she has had so many challenges, but she continues to persevere. She did not have any type of Christmas holiday celebration last year because she wasn’t working. She is currently working part-time, and trying to get another part-time job. Star is hoping Holiday Wishes can help her create a happy Christmas for her family.”
The application was submitted in October on behalf of three participants and their families – all three had their wishes granted. The awards included bicycles for their kids and a generous cash allowance to use as needed. Because of this extraordinary gift, each of these families were able to obtain some much-needed household goods, holiday gifts and take a couple more steps to achieving stable, independent lives.
