Meet David Schlobohm – the face of Goodwill in Rochester

David Schlobohm has served as the General Manager of Rochester’s Goodwill store for two years and will become the General Manager of Goodwill’s second Rochester store when it opens on January 30.

Although originally from Faribault, over the last ten years he and his family have made the Rochester area their home. He and his wife of 33 years live in Byron. His wife works in Pine Island, and he has a daughter who’s a teacher in Dodge Center.

He likes the outdoor activities the area offers, especially the hiking and biking trails, and appreciates the world-class health care as well as the diversity it brings to the community. “I love the Clinic and the health care facilities,” he explains.”There are always a lot of people in town for the Clinic who end up visiting us at Goodwill.” He’s always willing to lend an ear and learn more about first-time visitors to the area.

His favorite part of the job? “Working with my team and connecting with the customers,” he answers. “Our customers are treasure hunters – they come to Goodwill hoping to find that one great deal. There are many customers I know by name and enjoy talking to them when they are in shopping or donating.”

After several years spent in retail management, he jumped at the chance to work at Goodwill. “I wanted to work for a company that was actually doing things to help people,” he says. “It’s my way to give back to the community.”

He’s surprised when people don’t know that Goodwill is more than just a retail store. “A lot of people don’t realize all the work Goodwill does in the community, or that we’re a nonprofit. 85% of every dollar we earn goes back into our services and programs.”

Despite a busy schedule, he’s active in the Rochester community. “Goodwill offers me a great work-life balance,” he says. He’s involved in Rochester Chamber of Commerce groups like the early morning “A.M. Espresso” group and the “Business After Hours” group. He’s also very active in Rochester’s volunteer community and is a member of the Rochester Area Volunteer Administration (RAVA).

One of his favorite volunteer events was helping with the nonprofit tent at a Rochester Honkers game last summer. He and some others, including Goodwill’s mascot G-Willy, were present to hand out store coupons and inform game-attenders about the great work Goodwill does in the community.
