Meet Rudy – a Goodwill-Easter Seals Participant of the Year

After many years as a retail employee, Rudy wanted to find a profession he loved, a role he could grow in and a company where he’d be appreciated.

“My retail job was taking a toll on me mentally,” Rudy explained. “I wanted to be in a place where I felt like they cared.”

He hoped to find a job in the banking industry, but his work history and lack of computer skills made it difficult to get his foot in the door.

Luckily for Rudy, he knew Laura, a trainer at Goodwill Easter-Seals Minnesota who had worked with him several years before. When she heard he was looking for new opportunities, she suggested he take part in Goodwill-Easter Seals’ Financial Services Education & Training Program.

Rudy agreed. He enrolled in the eight-week, 150-hour course.

He excelled above and beyond the requirements of the class and even earned a Perfect Attendance Award. “Rudy maintained a positive attitude, fully involved himself in all class activities and discussion,” Laura said. And he was always willing to lend a hand to others who were struggling.”

After graduation, Rudy was just as diligent in his job search, looking for opportunities that matched his newly acquired skills, as well as working with Goodwill-Easter Seals to perfect his resume and interviewing skills.

Rudy appreciated the helped he received, telling us that Goodwill-Easter Seals “helped me with my resume, cover letters and preparing for interviews. My resume was skimpy and now it’s great, something I’m proud of.”

He prepared for each interview by touching base with Goodwill-Easter Seals staff – even requesting mock interviews over the phone. His determination paid off the day he carried an application into a delivery service company and was given an on-the-spot interview.

”It was a three-interview process,” he explained. “As part of my last interview, I had to take a data entry test, which is a 10-key test of speed and accuracy. I was really nervous and thought I failed the test. But I got a call back the next day telling me I had the job. I was so excited.”

The job training he received at Goodwill-Easter Seals has helped him succeed with his new company. After just five weeks, Rudy was offered an On-Call position and the opportunity to interact directly with customers.

Asked if he would recommend Goodwill-Easter Seals’ job training to anyone looking to make a significant change in their career, Rudy says. “Absolutely. It is an excellent way to prepare for work. I really wish I had done it long ago. My resume was poor and now it’s something I’m proud of. I thought interviewing would be hard for me, but it was really okay.

The Goodwill-Easter Seals staff provided me with a great support system and I know that I can return to them for help, should I ever need to.”
