A note from our president – honoring mothers

In honor of Mother’s Day, this month’s issue of our What’s Working newsletter features stories about three of the amazing women who have been a part of our programs recently.

Meet Danielle

The first story is of Danielle, a single mother who became one of our 2014 Participants of the Year. Like many single mothers, the challenges she faced were not only about raising her children but also finding work. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for single mothers is several percentage points higher than the rate for married women. Even worse, for a single mom with children six years old or younger, the unemployment rate can be two or three times as high as the unemployment rate for a married woman.

For Danielle, when her 13-year marriage ended she needed to be able to take care of her two young children, but was unable to find even a part-time job. One day, she read an email that led her to take Medical Office training at Goodwill-Easter Seals. Her determination to succeed and become independent is inspiring. Read her story and you’ll understand why she was chosen as a Participant of the Year.

Meet Missy

The second story is about Missy and Philomena. Both now work for Wells Fargo – Philomena as a Vice President, and Missy as a teller. Philomena is one of Goodwill-Easter Seals dedicated and cherished supporters. Last year, Missy was going through our Bank & Finance training course, and Philomena – as she often does – came to speak with the class. Philomena was a source of inspiration for Missy during her training and Missy made sure to contact her to thank her. When it came time to apply for jobs, Philomena gave Missy a recommendation and helped her land her new role.

As I write this, we are only days away from the 9th annual Power of Work Celebration on May 14. For all those who helped contribute to the great success of this event, I’d like to take this chance to say thank you. Like both these stories show, the power of work is something that is very important and very meaningful. We’re thrilled to have the chance to celebrate it with our partners, coworkers and participants.
