Sophisticated chic a la Goodwill

By Guest Blogger Lindsey Herzog
My mom says I look like an Ivy Leaguer when I wear my hair like this. I wonder if Ivy Leaguers get their Ralph Lauren sweaters from Goodwill for $7 too? I love a good preppy staple, and a red cable-knit is just the thing for our cold Minnesota winters. So when I searched for nubs and wear and tear and found nothing of the like, I most certainly had to snatch it right up. Just out of curiosity, I looked this up on the Ralph Lauren website. Not surprisingly, what I found out sweetened the taste of victory from my glorious find. $100!

One of my style signatures is making sophisticated chic happen at a surprisingly low cost. This outfit is the perfect example. I mix in pieces that I spent a little more on, like the houndstooth skirt (The Limited) and boat shoes (Sperry Top Sider), with some great steals like the sweater, bubble necklace (ebay for $10!) and classic trench (Forever 21 for $35!). The houndstooth pattern and texture of the skirt elevate the look, right along with the obvious quality of the sweater. The trench is a classy element as well, and the preppy necklace, shoes, and headband polish everything off.

Talking trends, most of these pieces simply do not individually go out of style. It’s how they’ve been paired that make the look fresh and modern. Pairing the red with the yellow was a color-blocking move. Color-blocking has been a fashion do for a couple of years and it is still going strong.

Ok, now it’s time to make me jealous. Tell me about your most sophisticated chic find from Goodwill!
