The stigma of having a criminal history is enough to prevent many from seeking (and obtaining) jobs and interviews. That’s tough for a group of people recently out of prison and seeking to join the rest of the working world. Getting job seekers and and job providers together in the same room was the number one goal of our second annual Second Chance Career Fair.

Final preparations by employers just before the opening of the Second Chance Career Fair

92 job-seekers attended our July 27 event, and the number of employers grew from 5 to 11.

James Houston, our business development manager, was excited about the turnout, “I think any time you can bring under-served populations into a room full of people who can provide an opportunity to succeed it’s a success… I think we’re on the right path to create more opportunities for job seekers who have a criminal background.”

Free games for career fair attendees to bring home to their families.

This was the second year of the Second Chance Career Fair, and James thinks there’s more room for growth, “Two years in a row of this event means we have some buy-in from employers and the community… It’s a special event and we can’t wait to host it again next year!” He’s also excited about the growing number of employers interested in hiring at the event and would like to thank those businesses that attended the career fair.

We at Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota would like to wish all Second Chance Career Fair attendees good luck after a busy day of job applications!
