Star Wars is a crowd favorite at any time of year, so it only seems fitting that many kids (and let’s be honest, adults too) want to be part of the action this Halloween!
What better way to get in on the fun than to dress as your favorite Star Wars character this year? Here’s a few ways to make it happen on a budget:
Yoda – To create a DIY Yoda costume, you only need a few pieces. Grab a dark brown long-sleeve shirt and matching pants (dark brown pants or leggings). You’ll need a long white/off-white sweater or light coat, even a lab coat would work for this. Lastly for clothing, you’ll need a rope to use for a belt. To get the trademark green head with ears, you can find a green stocking cap or use face paint – then add on green construction paper (or if you’re crafty, sew on green felt) to create the ears! And don’t forget a walking stick or staff!
Chewbacca – For this thrifty version, you’ll need a brown shirt with similar color pants, a furry vest, brown boots, and a square studded sash. Don’t worry if you can’t find exactly what you want in a sash, a brown ribbon works just fine! Just use duct tape or masking tape to block off sections and create an illusion of the trademark Chewbacca sash. Lastly, keep your eyes open for a mask (there are lots out there!) but if you don’t manage to find one, brown face paint with fake fangs and a brown wig will get the job done!
Darth Vader – Want to walk on the dark side? A Darth Vader costume is easy! You’ll just need to find black jeans or leggings, a long sleeve black shirt, black boots, and of course a light saber (you can even make one out of a red or blue pool noodle with black electrical tape at the end)! Find a black helmet and hot glue on black felt to create the Darth Vader mask look – or just search for the pre-made version while you’re out and about or at Goodwill!
Princess Leia – Every girl Star Wars fan wants to be Princess Leia at some point. She’s pretty, she’s adventurous and her look is totally achievable! Find a white long-sleeve dress or you can even make one out of a bed sheet. You’ll also need a silver belt to complete the outfit, which shouldn’t be hard to find! To achieve her hairstyle, you’ll make two buns – one on each side of your head over your ears. This is the trademark look for her character!
Luke Skywalker – Do you have a Luke Skywalker fan in your house? Or maybe it’s you! Create a Luke Skywalker costume in just a few simple steps. You’ll need a pair of straight-leg khakis, a long white top, with a brown knitted belt. For footwear, find tall brown boots or wear light brown loafers and wrap your calves and ankles with a flexible ACE bandage to create the same look at Luke Skywalker. Lastly, don’t forget your light saber to complete the look!
There are many ways to make your Star Wars Halloween costume this year from simple thrift finds! Get started early to make sure you collect all that you need, and be sure to check back often to see what new items you can find for the finishing touches!
