Thrifty style ideas for the cold

As they’re so fond of saying on Game of Thrones, “winter is coming.” And don’t we Minnesotans know it. We may have had a mild autumn so far, but the cold weather is on its way. And when it gets here, our brains tend to freeze and we start wearing the same outfits over and over again.

So! Before all that descends upon us, here are a few shopping, style, and outfit ideas to consider for late fall and early winter, all featuring trendy items you can thrift at your local Goodwill store.

Long-line blazers are hot this season, and a more fitted alternative to long-but-loose boyfriend blazers. This is a great piece to use if you like to mix up your silhouette since it hits mid-thigh or lower. (Traditional blazers tend to hit at the high hip.) I thrifted this heavy ponte beauty a month or so ago, and love that it’s structured but cozy.

Stripes. Always stripes, people. This print never goes out of style and is a great way to break up the solids in your closet. Horizontal stripes can make you look wider, but who cares?! They’re chic, timeless, and oh-so-fun to wear. If you want a less widening stripe, skip the classic (thrifted!) Breton I’m wearing here, and pick something with stripes of varying widths. You’ll find stripes of all types on the thrift racks for fall and winter.

Olive green is super trendy this season, and I’m just thrilled. This color is a near-neutral that works equally well with jewel tones, several brights, and all other neutrals. And it comes in a huge spread of shades from dusty pale olive to deep rich olive, like you see on my thrifted cargo jacket here. Pick an olive that suits your style, and bring it into your wardrobe for winter. (Sidenote: Leather pants are also HUGE right now. Mine aren’t thrifted, but I see dozens of pairs every time I hit a Goodwill store.)

Scarves are a winter staple for many, but this year try out an oversized or blanket scarf. This style can feel a bit overwhelming at first, but once you’ve figured out which scarf tie works best for you, it’s the only style you’ll want to wear. Keeping your neck covered is essential to conserving body heat, so why not do it with a trendy blanket scarf? You’ll find plenty on the thrift store shelves this time of year.

Winter may be long and dark, and that can take its toll on your mood. Injecting some fun into your cold weather outfits can be a surprisingly effective way to lift your spirits. So hit the thrift racks, scoop up a few stylish pieces, and chic yourself out for the season!
