Our Process

It’s a fact that finding stable employment is a significant challenge for individuals returning to communities after incarceration. Data suggests that 90% of parole violations stem from unemployment or lack of income. Public safety and the community tax base are improved when inviduals achieve their goal of sustainable work and competitive wages.

Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota is well-positioned to implement comprehensive and evidence-based practices to help individuals find and keep a job. Our Reentry Program helps people returning to the community overcome barriers to employment, independence and success. We begin with outreach and preparation before individuals are released from our local, county, state and federal correctional facilities.

Several components of our proven Reentry Program are made possible through partnerships that offer cognitive-skills training, referrals for mental health and chemical dependency treatment centers, child support services, legal aid, rehabilitation for those with disabilities and access to housing assistance resources. Through case management, education, training, employment preparation, mentoring and other support services, this program is responsive to the particular needs and barriers of this population.

Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota believes fiercely in second chances. The team running our Reentry Program walks that talk every day by working one-on-one with returning individuals and connecting them to the right resources — education, job training, housing assistance, medical services, mentoring and so much more.

The power of our program is clear: the recidivism rate among GESMN Reentry Program participants is just 11 percent after 3 years, compared to the national average of 68 percent after 3 years. [DOJ]

Some more stats on our Reentry Program:

  • 132 participants were enrolled over a 36 month period
  • 78% earned a credential by completing a job training program, such as GESMN construction and automotive training programs
  • Participants went on to obtain employment at an average hourly wage of $13.29/hour
