For Cass, starting her first job was a step toward independence and building real-world experience. While attending SAIL (Students Achieving Independent Living) Transition School, her work coordinator connected her with Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota’s (GESMN) Work-Based Learning program. This referral helped open the door to her first job.

Cass began working at the Chanhassen Goodwill store, where she quickly demonstrated self-sufficincy and meticulous organizational skills.

Cass gained hands-on experience in a variety of roles. From stocking shelves to assisting customers, she learned many aspects of working in a retail environment. Her favorite task was working behind the scenes, sorting through donated items, which allowed her to use her strong organizational skills and attention to detail — qualities that quickly stood out to store staff.

Standing Out as a Self-Starter

Karen, Cass’s career navigator, recognized Cass’s strengths early on. "Cass was very self-sufficient,” Karen said. “Cass could go ahead and perform a task like cleaning the whole front vestibule, which is usually something that takes several people to do, and she did it on her own.”

Cass’s strong work ethic extended to everything she took on. Karen also noted how efficiently and carefully Cass worked. "Cass was a very fast worker, accurate and meticulous,” she said.

Building a Strong Foundation

Cass’s impact went beyond completing tasks — she also served as a positive example for others in the program. “We’re really happy that Cass has taken the time to work with us,” Karen shared. “She’s done a great job and has been a great role model to the other students.”

As Cass looks to the future, her experience at Goodwill helped lay a strong foundation for what comes next. After considering Cass’s strengths. Karen said, “I think Cass has a good eye and attention to detail. I hope in the future she can learn to use those skills in her next position and career.”
