Discover How Sam Found His Talent for Computers and Customer Service via Goodwill’s Employee Development Services

September 22, 2025

Sam was looking to gain work experience and build his confidence. With guidance from his vocational rehabilitation counselor, he joined Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota’s (GESMN) Employee Development Services program.

Sam connected with Karen, his career navigator, who  helped him uncover his professional strengths.

Exploring Strengths and Finding His Niche

In the program, Sam worked in a variety of roles at a Goodwill store: =stocking books, putting away clothing, salvaging donations and performing price checks.

But it was when he started working at the cash register that everything clicked. Sam discovered he enjoyed helping customers, “I thought it was fun and enjoyed it.” .

When Sam trained at the cash register, his friendliness and technical skills emerged — skills that he hopes will one day lead to a career in computer programming and coding. As he practiced transactions with help from his supervisor, his confidence in the workplace grew.

“Sam discovered his strength in customer service,” Karen said. “His computer skills and attention to detail really stood out.”

Growing Skills and Building Connections

In addition to growing his skill set, Sam made a meaningful impact on people around him. “Sam was very friendly, kind and connected with people,” Karen added. “He was easy to work with.”

Even though he faced some physical challenges, that didn’t stop him from showing up and giving the best to his workplace every day.

“He really worked hard at what he was doing,” Karen said. “He didn’t give up. He was willing to try new things and was honest about what he could do and where he needed help. I think that was really helpful to anyone working with him.”
