When Anthony was navigating a difficult co-parenting journey through the court system, his love for his children kept him going. “My children are my everything, like they’re my heartbeat and the reason why I work so hard,” Anthony said.

In March 2025, Anthony joined Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota’s (GESMN) FATHER Project, a program available in St. Cloud, Twin Cities and Rochester that assists parents in overcoming barriers that prevent them from supporting their children economically and emotionally.

A Place to Be Understood

From the moment he joined FATHER Project, Anthony felt a sense of belonging. "The reason why I like to keep going… is because I feel a sense that somebody finally understands,” Anthony said. “It is the best thing. I actually yearn to come every Wednesday as much as I can.”

The weekly group meetings provided him with encouragement, tools and a sense of clarity. "It taught me how to co-parent,” he explained. “It taught me to take time and figure out what the situation is before I just jump to a conclusion.”

Anthony said he was hesitant at first, but the group helped him build confidence and develop cognitive and positive thinking skills. In July, he received a certificate of completion for attending 12 FATHER Project groups.

New Perspective, New Possibilities

Through open conversations with other dads, Anthony found both wisdom and encouragement. “Hearing the fathers talk about their children—from newborn to teens—helped me communicate and brought me closer to my daughter,” he said.

He also learned to embrace a more open, healthy perspective on co-parenting, even inviting his co-parent and her partner to a BBQ. “For children to just have these loving adults around them…that’s what’s important,” Anthony said.

Sara, his career navigator, saw the transformation firsthand. “In the first couple of groups, Anthony was very focused on his co-parent being in a new relationship,” she shared. “But the group helped him see that having another person who cares for his child doesn’t take anything away. When Anthony invited them both to a BBQ—that was really huge. He realized that as long as we’re all loving the child, that’s what matters.”

Now, Anthony wants to give back and share what he’s learned with other dads. “I want to help other guys out — ‘don’t give up, I’ve been through the same thing,’” he said. “If you want it, you can get it. Do the steps. Don’t give up. You got everybody back here who’s got your back. It’s the best thing.”

Sara, based in FATHER Project’s St. Cloud location, added “We’re constantly adding new dads to the group, so it’s really interesting to watch the parents like Anthony – who’ve gone through the program – share their experience and offer support to the newer dads in the group. It’s a really fun dynamic to see.”

'FATHER Project Has Got Your Back’

Anthony encourages other fathers to give FATHER Project a try, even if it’s emotional at first. “I was the most emotional person in there,” he said. “And just by closing my mouth and listening, I’ve learned so much. If you feel like you need help, this is the best place to go. Hands down.”

He emphasizes the support the program offers every step of the way. “FATHER Project has got your back; they’ll advocate for you and show you the things you need to do to get your children.”

“I’m just team FATHER Project,” Anthony adds.
