April proclaimed ‘Second Chance Month’ to recognize challenges faced by justice-impacted people

Pedro wasn’t sure what to expect when he first walked into Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota’s (GESMN) Reentry Program which was recommended by his roommate. At the time, Pedro was hoping to find job leads—but what he found was much more than that.

The Reentry Program works 1-1 with individuals exiting incarceration to connect them to resources and employment that helps to stabilize their lives and provide a second chance. April is recognized as Second Chance Month to “increase public awareness about the challenges faced by people who have been involved with the criminal justice system and create opportunities,” said Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz in the “Second Chance Month” proclamation he issued on April 1.

“They helped with insurance to get my license back,” Pedro said of GESMN’s Reentry Program. “They helped me get my computer and hotspot. Dario, my reentry counselor, helps me so much. Any resources I need with housing, he finds them.”

A Fresh Start with New Opportunities

With GESMN’s support, Pedro landed two jobs—one at Ratner Steel and another at MSP Demolition. Having a stable income and reliable transportation has opened doors to even more opportunities.

“Dario referred me to get work tools and steel-toed boots, without that I wouldn't be able to work these positions. The license piece was also really stressing me out,” Pedro admitted. “Now I can fix my car, which means I have access to higher-paying jobs because I don’t have to rely on transit. The laptop helps me apply to jobs and relieves a lot of mental stress.”

Prior to incarceration Pedro had worked as a carpenter and subcontractor with his own business for five years, but struggles with addiction led to setbacks. Now, he’s focused on rebuilding his life and maintaining sobriety.

Moving Forward with Determination

Pedro’s reentry counselor, Dario, has been impressed with his drive.

“Pedro has been very diligent—attending mentoring groups and career training sessions,” Dario said. “He’s motivated, pleasant, and focused. In just two short months, he’s secured two jobs and is already looking at additional prospects.”

Pedro encourages others in similar situations to reach out and take advantage of the support available.

“There was a time I felt like I wasn’t going to get hired,” Pedro said. “But the help is there—you just have to go get it. Don’t give up. Don’t lose faith.”

Now, Pedro’s goal is to maintain employment, stay on track and keep moving forward.
