Justin’s interest in welding began in middle school and grew over the years. After high school, he enrolled at Ridgewater College, where he earned a welding certificate through hard work and dedication. His Vocational Rehabilitation Services counselor connected him with Jennifer, a career navigator, who introduced him to Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota’s (GESMN) supported employment services.
Shy and soft-spoken, Justin faced some challenges in school but stayed focused on his goals. “He never missed one day at college and worked super hard to get that certification by just being motivated and really showing himself that he could do it. There were so many proud moments and the accomplishment itself was huge,” Jennifer said.
Though welding was always a goal, Justin told Jennifer he was open to any kind of work if it meant supporting his family. When Jennifer heard a local welding company was hiring, she told Justin about it. At first, he was hesitant and had some self-doubt. “We worked through it and did some role playing. We did interview skills together beforehand. I gave his name to the company, they reached out to him and he did all the hard work from there,” Jennifer added.
Family First
Justin secured employment as a full-time associate welder, doing something he’s passionate about while helping the people he loves most – his family.
“They were very excited, very supportive and already started planning around my schedule,” Justin said about his family’s reaction to his new job. He comes from a close-knit household with three younger siblings, an older sibling and his parents. Giving back to them has always been important to him.
Justin’s family is his biggest support system. Since he doesn’t have his driver’s license yet, his older sister drives him to and from work between her own job. That kind of support helps fuel his next goal.
Looking Ahead
Justin’s next step? Getting his driver’s license. He has his permit and is on the waiting list for behind-the-wheel training. It’s the next step in gaining independence – and he’s ready for it.
Looking back, Justin shared, “I wouldn’t have the current job I have now if it weren’t for this program. I wouldn’t have known about it or anything.” He continued, “They made things a lot easier for me – helping me build my resume and providing contacts of people to help me find my current job.”
Jennifer has seen firsthand just how far Justin has come. “I’m just so proud of him. He’s a shy person yet he’s done all the hard work. That’s just awesome. I hope he continues to use his support system and reach all those goals he sets. The driver's license will be huge, the car, driving, supporting his family like he does – just being a good human that he is.”
