Joshua's career in manufacturing was taking a toll on him physically. “I needed a change because I would come home to my kids and it would be difficult to do the things a father should do with their kids,” Joshua explained.
In 2024, after being laid off, Joshua sought assistance from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) and got connected with Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota’s (GESMN) Financial Industry Training program.
“I’ve always had a passion for statistics, reading earnings reports and the general economy,” Joshua said. His passion helped him realize that he could pursue a career in the financial industry.
The Financial Industry Training program is a 10-week course to prepare individuals for a career in the financial industry. The program includes preparation for the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) certification exam, a key credential for securing employment in the field, along with career coaching and skill-building assistance.
Gaining New Skills
In January 2025, Joshua joined Financial Industry Training, where one of the biggest lessons he learned was the importance of dressing professionally. “I’ve changed my wardrobe quite a bit and that has been something that I would have never thought would be a big deal,” he said. “I have proper button-up collared shirts now.”
Joshua also found the mock interviews and the one-on-one sessions beneficial. “Even after the course ends, Michelle, our career navigator, continues to work one-on-one with you until you get placed, which I think is an absolute, amazing feature of the program,” he noted.
By week five, Joshua passed his SIE exam and his confidence grew even more. “It’s given me hope that I’ll get out of the manufacturing industry because I kind of thought I’d be pigeonholed into it,” he said. The skills Joshua gained during the program have prepared him to transition into the financial industry.
The Power of Support
GESMN instructor Dennis praised Joshua’s dedication and determination. “Joshua was incredibly driven in class. He quickly moved through the content,” Dennis said. “Joshua’s determination is inspiring, and we’re all excited to follow his career and future successes.”
GESMN career navigator Michelle added, “Joshua is admirable for taking the risk of leaving an industry he had been in for many years and taking a chance with the Financial Industry Training and excelling.”
Advice for Others
Joshua encourages others looking to change careers: “It’s a great program if you’re looking into the financial industry but don’t have the money to go to a university again or for the first time,” he advised. “If you’re in a similar situation where you feel pigeonholed in your current career, I’d say it’s a great steppingstone into the financial industry.”
“I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity,” he continued. “It is life changing and I believe it will give me and my kids a better future. I’m very, very appreciative of this opportunity.”
