Parris Drives for Success

Parris came to Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota (GESMN) after learning that there was no room for growth at his previous job. This was also during COVID, a time when training programs offer more opportunity for skill development and career growth. So, he enrolled in our free, 8-week automotive training program. This program offers hands-on training in multiple areas of automotive in our 5,400 square foot, 4-bay training facility also includes job placement assistance.

 

“During the height of COVID, classes were virtual four days and one day in the automotive shop. I was really impressed with how quickly Parris took on new tasks, given the hybrid training model and adapting it required,” says Ellen Stavreff, a GESMN career navigator.

 

Parris’ positive attitude and dedication was evident throughout his time in the program; mock interviewers loved his confidence and can-do mindset.

 

After finishing his automotive training, Parris landed not one, but two jobs! He currently works full-time for the City of Minneapolis Public Works and part-time for the City of Coon Rapids.

 

“I am proud of myself for finishing the program and making a change for good in my life,” says Parris.

 

With two jobs, Parris stays busy and feels that he is on a stable career path where he will eventually retire. He is grateful that both his jobs provide benefits and allow him to spend time with his family.

 

“I went for what I wanted, and I got it. If you think you can do it, just go for it,” says Parris.

 

Ellen says Parris is a great example of someone who has a lot to offer an employer and is being offered a second chance at meaningful work.
