As a senior in high school, Will was eager to gain work experience. “I wanted to get a job and I needed the experience,” he shared. Through his school and counselors, Will was introduced to Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota’s (GESMN)  worked-based learning program.

Will gained hands-on experience in various roles at the Chanhassen Goodwill store, from stocking shelves to assisting customers. However, he did have a favorite task, “Putting the clothes away was my favorite because I’m really into fashion. It was cool to see a lot of different clothes there,” he said. These tasks helped Will develop valuable workplace skills for his future career.

His strong work ethic and positive attitude made him a valuable team member. According to Karen, Will’s career navigator, “What really stood out with Will was that he was willing to do other tasks—that he didn’t just stick to one thing. He was willing to work with other people.”

Building Confidence and Communication Skills

One of the biggest transformations Will experienced was in his social and communication skills. “The program made me more social, more aware. Everything in general improved for me,” Will reflected. As he interacted with customers and worked alongside his team members, Will’s confidence grew. “Talking to people and having those social interactions were my favorite. That’s the whole reason why I wanted to get a job was because of that,” Will shared.

Will’s ability to try new things and seek help when needed allowed him to become more confident in his abilities. Expressing gratitude for the guidance Karen provided, "She made me more responsible,” Will said.

While in the program, Will was also volunteering at a coffee shop. “He is definitely a go-getter,” Karen said. What started as a volunteer opportunity turned into a job. Now, Will works three to four days a week, handling the register, stocking and doing dishes. The communication skills he developed during retail skills training have work-based learning has played a key role in his success at the coffee shop.

“I enjoy working the register because I love talking to people,” Will shared about his coffee shop job.
