Train for a New Career

Industry-specific employment training programs, ranging from 4 – 12 weeks, that help expand the skills needed to find and maintain employment (information session attendance and basic-skills testing are required prior to enrollment).

  • Enroll in trainings targeting careers in automotive, construction, business services, retail and more.
  • Earn a certificate at graduation and take advantage of placement and support services to help find a job and grow.
  • Receive stipends or training wages while enrolled in select courses.

College & Career Navigation

Career navigation helps individuals enroll in training, find work and prepare for higher levels of future education and employment.

  • Balance education with family and work responsibilities; build a professional image.
  • Overcome obstacles and access support for transportation, childcare or housing.
  • Connect with college staff, faculty and employers; navigate tuition and financial resources.

Personalized, flexible job placement services are the heart of GESMN’s mission; we work closely with job seekers and employers to connect people to a career.

What to Expect

  • Get started with eight weeks of training that includes job placement assistance
  • Instruction in shop safety, engine lubrications, cooling systems, tires, belts, brakes, customer service, technical service information, multi-point inspection and maintenance
  • Industry speakers, tours and employer contacts
  • Assistance with resumes, applications, interviewing, job search, retention and advancement
  • Earn college credit
  • Training hours: Mon. – Fri., 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.
  • Training available at NO COST to eligible students; women are encouraged to apply
  • Goodwill Easter Seals Minnesota has articulation agreements with Dakota Technical College, Dunwoody College of Technology, and Saint Paul College. Students who successfully complete the Automotive Training course at GESMN can earn transfer credits for specified automotive programs at the institutions noted above.

Goodwill-Easter Seals is accredited by the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement, an accreditation division of AdvancED, as a postsecondary school. What to Expect

  • Get started with twelve weeks of training that includes job placement assistance
  • Instruction in construction concepts, green building practices, tool use, blueprints, math and measuring, insulation, drywall, siding, roofing and deconstruction
  • Union and industry speakers and tours
  • Assistance with résumés, applications, interviewing, job search, retention and advancement
  • Receive an OSHA 10 Completion Card and an industry recognized credential
  • Earn 36 continuing education units and college credit at St. Paul College
  • Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota has a training articulation agreement with Saint Paul College. Students who successfully complete the Construction Program at Goodwill-Easter Seals can bypass the first term of Saint Paul College’s Carpentry Diploma program and start in Semester 2
  • Training hours: Mon. – Fri., 8 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
  • Training available at NO COST to eligible students, women are encouraged to apply

What to expect

  • Get started with ten weeks of training that includes job placement assistance
  • Learn fundamental IT skills while building your knowledge of careers in IT, customer support, and related fields 
  • Presented in partnership with MSP TechHire, this class will feature staff from CompTIA and Goodwill-Easter Seals, build your technical knowledge, boost your academic skills, and help develop individual goals for the future
  • No experience is needed in the field of IT! Ideal candidates will understand that this training is a starting point for future training and education
  • Assistance with career planning, resumes, applications, interviewing, job search, retention and advancement
  • Support achieving your long-term goals, including additional education and future career planning

Retail Skills

Retail Skills Training

Retail Skills Training is an eight-week course designed to provide job skills for the retail industry. Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota provides individuals with an average of 10 hours of paid training per week. This is a referral based program only and not open to the general public.

What to Expect

  • 160-hour course
  • Hands-on work experience at local retail businesses
  • Instructions in retail terminology, customer service, safety, cashiering, stocking, time management, communication skills, problem-solving and conflict resolution
  • Guest speakers from within the retail industry
  • Financial literacy training
  • Employment readiness training - resume development, application preparation, interview skills, job search and retention skills training
  • Assistance with job placement and follow-up services for graduates
  • Support to achieve long-term career goals

Transitional Employment

People with disabilities can get invaluable exposure to work through hands-on, paid experience at employer partner sites.

  • Undergo on-the-job evaluation to identify barriers, set goals and start a career
  • Build and practice fundamental work and interviewing skills, develop career goals and get assistance with job searches
  • Explore employment interests through informational interviews and by shadowing people in specific occupations
  • Research employers and job fit, understand resumes, the application process and interview skills
  • Transition aged youth get on-the-job learning, receive ongoing performance feedback  and support to manage workplace expectations

Vocational Assessment

Our assessment helps people with disabilities identify challenges to employment and better understand the skills, strengths and accommodations that will help them succeed at their jobs.

  • Build essential skills like communication, safety, work quality and more.
  • Receive employment recommendations that match individual skills and abilities.

Dislocated Worker Program

Sometimes job openings in a specialized field decline, or skills don’t transfer into other industries. GESMN can help! Career specialists provide a variety of custom services to meet individual needs:

  • Career planning, counseling and industry-specific job search
  • Assessment tools to identify skills, abilities and interests
  • Resume, interviewing and networking skill development
  • Funding for training, certifications, or skills upgrades to reach reemployment goals

Participants must be laid off through no fault of their own, receive notice of layoff and/or receive unemployment insurance benefits within the last three years.

Minneapolis Works

Minneapolis job seekers get individualized career guidance, skills training, and job search services:

  • Resume, application assistance and ongoing support
  • Job leads and employer events

Financial Services (St. Cloud)

Eight weeks of hands-on training in St. Cloud that includes job placement assistance. Participants will receive: 

  • Instruction in retail banking, customer service, sales, financial terminology, regulations, cash handling, balancing, common teller transactions, computer proficiency, industry performance expectations and more.
  • Assistance with resumes, applications, interviewing, job search, retention and advancement
  • Support to achieve long-term career goals
